In a heartfelt call to action marking the 2025 World Breast Cancer Day, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal, the First Lady of Zamfara State, has emphasized that early detection remains the most powerful tool in the fight against cancer, particularly among women.
Speaking at a community health outreach organized in collaboration with the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) initiative, Hajiya Lawal urged women across Nigeria to prioritize regular screenings and self-examinations, noting that timely diagnosis can significantly improve survival rates and reduce the burden of the disease.
“As women, we must care for ourselves and one another. For those battling cancer, let us stand with them in love, strength, and hope,” she said. “Together, we can build a future where no one faces cancer alone. Behind every cancer diagnosis is a face, a name, and a life that deserves care and dignity.”
The First Lady’s remarks come amid growing concerns over late-stage cancer diagnoses in Nigeria, which often result in limited treatment options and higher mortality rates. She reaffirmed her commitment to raising awareness, promoting preventive healthcare, and supporting survivors through advocacy and community engagement.
As the newly appointed National Secretary of FLAC, Hajiya Lawal is leading efforts to expand cancer education and screening programs across Zamfara and beyond. The initiative brings together First Ladies from across Nigeria to champion policy reforms, mobilize resources, and deliver life-saving interventions at the grassroots level.
During the event, free breast cancer screenings were offered to hundreds of women, alongside educational sessions on lifestyle changes, nutrition, and mental health support for patients and caregivers.
