The African Union (AU) today strongly condemned the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau. The AU calls for the immediate and unconditional release of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and all detained officials. This demand follows the swift coup that occurred days after legislative elections on November 24, 2025.
AU Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat issued a statement urging all stakeholders to respect constitutional order and refrain from actions that undermine democracy.
"The African Union reiterates its zero tolerance policy towards unconstitutional changes of government," the statement read. The coup saw General Horta N'Tam sworn in as transitional president, amid accusations from opposition leaders that Embalo staged a "false coup" to disrupt election results.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) echoed the AU's position, condemning the arrest of Embalo and demanding the release of detained leaders, including Prime Minister Rui Duarte de Barros. Regional observers noted the takeover disrupts Guinea-Bissau's fragile stability, especially after peaceful polls.
The AU emphasizes the need for dialogue to restore peace and calls on the international community to support democratic processes in West Africa. Several African dignitaries remain affected by the unrest.
