End of an Era: Bollywood Star Dharmendra Passes On at 89

The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of legendary actor Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol, who passed away at his residence in Mumbai at the age of 89. Widely regarded as one of Bollywood’s most versatile and beloved stars, his death marks the close of a remarkable chapter in Indian cinema.  






Dharmendra’s career spanned more than six decades, during which he appeared in over 300 films. Known affectionately as the “He-Man of Bollywood,” he captivated audiences with his performances across genres including romance, action, comedy, and drama. His portrayal of Veeru in the 1975 classic Sholay remains one of the most iconic roles in Indian film history.  






Born on December 8, 1935, in Ludhiana, Punjab, Dharmendra rose from humble beginnings to national stardom after winning a talent contest that brought him to Bombay in the early 1960s. His debut in Bimal Roy’s Bandini set the stage for a career that would define the golden age of Bollywood. Over the years, he became a household name, admired for his charisma, resilience, and ability to connect with audiences across generations.  







Tributes have poured in from across India and beyond. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his passing as “the end of an era,” reflecting the profound impact Dharmendra had on Indian culture and cinema. Fellow actors, filmmakers, and fans have also expressed their grief, celebrating his legacy as both an artist and a family man.  








Dharmendra is survived by his wives Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and his six children — Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, Ahana Deol, Ajeeta, and Vijeta. His family, along with millions of admirers, will remember him not only for his cinematic achievements but also for his warmth and humility.  









The actor’s final film, Ikkis, is scheduled for release on December 25, 2025, offering audiences one last opportunity to witness his artistry on screen. His funeral was held at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai, attended by prominent figures from the film industry and beyond.  








Dharmendra’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in Bollywood. His journey from Punjab to the pinnacle of Indian cinema remains a testament to talent, perseverance, and the enduring power of storytelling. As the nation bids farewell, his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of actors and filmmakers.
