In a bold move to address persistent security challenges, the Plateau State Government has announced a strategic initiative to harness science and technology in its fight against insecurity. Governor Caleb Mutfwang unveiled the plan during a high-level security and innovation summit held in Jos, emphasizing the state's commitment to modernizing its approach to public safety.

Governor Mutfwang revealed that the state will deploy advanced surveillance tools, including military-grade drones, AI-powered monitoring systems, and data analytics platforms to enhance intelligence gathering, early threat detection, and rapid response capabilities.

“We are determined to move beyond reactive security measures. By integrating science and technology into our operations, we aim to protect our communities more effectively and restore lasting peace,” the governor stated.

The initiative will be implemented in partnership with local and international tech firms, research institutions, and security agencies. Pilot programs are expected to begin in high-risk areas such as Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Mangu.

The Plateau State Government also plans to establish a Security Innovation Hub to train local youth in drone operation, cybersecurity, and digital forensics. This effort aims to empower communities while creating a new generation of tech-savvy security professionals.

“We believe that technology should not only protect but also empower,” said Dr. Benjamin Izang, Commissioner for Science and Technology. “Our youth will be at the forefront of this transformation.”

Security experts and civil society organizations have praised the initiative as a potential model for other Nigerian states grappling with insurgency, banditry, and communal violence. The federal government is reportedly monitoring Plateau’s progress with interest, considering similar deployments in other regions.
