Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Johannesburg, South Africa, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled to take place from Saturday, November 22, to Sunday, November 23, 2025, at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.
President Tinubu, who was initially slated to attend the summit, postponed his trip to remain in Nigeria and address pressing security concerns following recent incidents in Kebbi and Kwara States. The decision underscores the administration’s prioritization of national security and its commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens.
The invitation to Nigeria was extended by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently chairs the G20. The summit will bring together leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies, alongside representatives of the European Union, the African Union, and major international financial institutions. Discussions are expected to focus on global economic stability, sustainable development, climate change, and strengthening multilateral cooperation.
According to Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Vice President Shettima will actively participate in high-level engagements and convey Nigeria’s perspectives on critical global issues. He will also highlight the country’s economic reforms, investment opportunities, and commitment to regional and international collaboration.
The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria immediately after the summit, following the conclusion of official engagements. His representation at the G20 reflects Nigeria’s determination to remain an active voice in shaping global economic and political discourse, while President Tinubu continues to focus on domestic priorities.
