In a major political realignment, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara today announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor made the declaration during a stakeholders' meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, attended by loyalists from both parties.

Governor Fubara cited the PDP's failure to protect him amid ongoing internal conflicts as the primary reason for his switch. This move comes on the heels of escalating tensions with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who remains a key PDP figure.

"PDP failed to protect me," Governor Fubara stated during the address. He further emphasized, "Our decision this evening is that we are moving to the APC." The governor expressed confidence that the APC aligns better with his vision for Rivers State's development and security.

The defection follows a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, which sparked speculation about potential alliances. Political analysts view this as a strategic shift that could reshape power dynamics in Rivers State and bolster the APC's influence in the region ahead of future elections.

APC leaders welcomed the governor's decision, highlighting it as a boost to national unity and progressive governance. PDP officials, however, expressed disappointment and hinted at possible legal challenges.

Governor Fubara assured residents that his administration remains committed to delivering on key promises, including infrastructure, healthcare, and economic growth, regardless of party affiliation.
