The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia today signed a landmark five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen defence and military cooperation. This agreement marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations and aims to enhance security collaboration between the two nations.
The MoU establishes a comprehensive framework for joint efforts in key areas, including military training, joint exercises, technical assistance, intelligence sharing, logistics support, and counter-terrorism initiatives. Both countries commit to building capacity, improving operational readiness, and addressing emerging threats such as insurgency and organized crime.
Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, Honourable Minister of State for Defence, signed the agreement on behalf of Nigeria, while Dr. Khaled H. Al-Biyari, Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs, represented Saudi Arabia. The signing ceremony underscores the growing partnership and mutual commitment to regional stability.
"The signing of this MoU is a significant milestone," said Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle. "It has been on the drawing board for some time, and its conclusion will strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture and enhance the capacity of our armed forces."
Ahmed Dan Wudil, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of State for Defence, added: "This agreement will cover strategic collaboration across security, military training, intelligence sharing, defence production, and joint operations for sustainable security development. It marks a significant step in boosting bilateral relations and enhancing collaborative efforts in tackling emerging security challenges in the country."
The pact takes effect immediately and includes provisions for renewal after five years, with options for termination upon three months' notice. Officials from both sides expressed optimism that this collaboration will contribute to long-term security, stability, and defence modernization in Nigeria and the broader region.
The Nigerian Ministry of Defence welcomes this development and anticipates it will play a crucial role in resolving ongoing security challenges.
