Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has clarified the nature of his engagement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), stating firmly that his interview with the agency focused solely on the alleged duplication of recovered Abacha loot, and had nothing to do with terrorism financing.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Malami addressed recent public speculations suggesting that his appearance before the EFCC was linked to terrorism-related investigations. He described such claims as misleading and completely unfounded.
“I was invited by the EFCC strictly in relation to allegations concerning the duplication of Abacha loot figures. At no point was terrorism financing ever discussed or linked to me,” Malami said. “It is important to set the record straight to prevent unnecessary confusion and misrepresentation.”
The former AGF reaffirmed his willingness to cooperate with all lawful investigations and stressed the need for accurate information in public discourse. He also urged the media and the public to avoid spreading claims that could distort facts or damage reputations without evidence.
Malami reiterated that during his tenure, all actions taken on recovered funds were done transparently and in line with legal frameworks, including international agreements guiding the return and management of such assets.
