Residents of Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, are expressing widespread appreciation for Governor Bassey Otu's innovative "Xmas Free Transport Service," which has provided much-needed relief amid rising transportation costs during the festive season. Launched earlier this month, the program has been hailed as a compassionate and timely intervention to support families and commuters.

The free bus service, which commenced on December 2 and is set to run for 31 days through the holiday period, aims to ease the financial burden on residents grappling with economic challenges. By offering complimentary rides on state-owned buses, the initiative has enabled thousands to travel affordably for shopping, family visits, and celebrations.

Governor Otu's administration has also extended the program to include boat transport services, reviving the state-owned Cross Line transport system with the addition of 10 new intercity buses and 50 smaller vehicles to enhance coverage across the state.

Local residents have been vocal in their praise, describing the service as a "lifesaver" in tough times. "This free bus initiative is a huge relief," said Mrs. Ekaette Okon, a market trader in Calabar. "With fuel prices so high, getting around for Christmas preparations was becoming impossible.

Governor Otu has truly shown he cares about the people." Similarly, Mr. John Effiong, a civil servant, added, "It's not just about the free rides; it's about bringing joy back to the season. This helps curb the high cost of transportation and allows us to focus on what matters—family and community."

The program was officially flagged off by Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, who emphasized its role in fostering unity and economic resilience. "Under Governor Otu's leadership, we are committed to initiatives that directly impact the lives of Cross Riverians," Odey stated at the launch. "This festive transport service is part of our broader efforts to make the holidays accessible and enjoyable for all."

Governor Otu, in approving the return of the Cross Line system, highlighted the administration's focus on sustainable solutions. "The spirit of Yuletide is about renewal and support," he said. "By providing free transport, we are ensuring that no one is left behind during this time of celebration."

The initiative has already seen high uptake, with buses operating on key routes within Calabar and to neighboring areas. Residents are encouraged to utilize the service responsibly and adhere to safety guidelines.
