The Edo State Government today dismissed widespread reports that described the recent unrest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, as a legitimate protest. Authorities instead characterize the incident as a well orchestrated riot, sponsored by external forces aiming to destabilize the state.
The violence erupted on January 9, 2026, following the tragic kidnapping and murder of a young man in the area. While initial gatherings stemmed from local frustrations over insecurity, the situation quickly devolved into coordinated acts of arson, property destruction, and chaos. Security agencies swiftly intervened, arresting 18 suspects based on evidence from viral videos showing deliberate vandalism.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, through his Chief Press Secretary Patrick Ebojele, revealed that investigations uncovered foreign sponsorship behind the riots. "This was not a spontaneous protest but a calculated riot funded by a Nigerian resident in Russia and collaborators in other overseas locations," stated Ebojele.
"Our security teams have identified the masterminds, who contacted local individuals to organize simultaneous disruptions in Ekpoma, Auchi, Irrua, and even at the Government House in Benin City. Funds traced back to diaspora sources confirm this external influence."
The government further alleges that opposition elements, potentially backed by foreign interests, orchestrated the unrest to discredit the administration and incite broader instability.
Despite these efforts, officials emphasize that no students from Ambrose Alli University were involved, as the institution had closed prior to the incident, and hostels stood empty. Arrests occurred outside university premises, countering false narratives circulating on social media.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to restoring peace and security in Edo State. "We will not tolerate attempts to undermine our progress. Those responsible will face justice, and we urge residents to remain calm as we address root causes like kidnapping through enhanced policing and community engagement," he added.
The administration calls on the public to disregard misleading reports and support ongoing investigations. Edo State remains focused on development, safety, and unity for all citizens.
