Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, today disclosed receiving death threats for his role in implementing Nigeria's comprehensive tax reforms. The revelations underscore the challenges and dangers associated with structural changes in the country's fiscal landscape.

Oyedele made the statements during a governance colloquium in Abuja on Tuesday. He emphasized that the threats arise from vested interests resisting the reforms. "Reforms are hard, and tax reforms are even harder. You need courage. I receive threats simply for trying to fix a broken system," Oyedele stated.

Nigeria's tax revenue collection lags significantly behind comparable nations, making these reforms essential. Oyedele highlighted deep seated mistrust in government, weak compliance, and poor public understanding as key obstacles. Despite the risks, he remains committed to the process.

The Federal Government rolled out four major laws on January 1, 2026: the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act 2025, and Joint Revenue Board Establishment Act 2025. These measures aim to streamline tax collection, eliminate illegal practices by over 60 agencies, and boost efficiency.

Oyedele urged Nigerians who support the reforms to voice their backing. He warned that silence allows misinformation to prevail. "Opposition to the reforms underscores the personal risks reform advocates face," he added.

Previous incidents reveal the ongoing threats. In 2025, Oyedele fled his home, relocated his family, and accepted police protection after announcing plans to curb unauthorized tax collections. "If you’re not in the public sector to steal money, it is not attractive at all," he noted earlier.

The committee continues its work to expand the tax base, improve compliance, and strengthen public finance. These efforts promise sustainable development for Nigeria.
