In a major political realignment that is expected to significantly strengthen the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State and at the federal level, eight members of the House of Representatives from Kano have formally resigned their membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and joined the APC.

The defecting lawmakers announced their decision today following extensive consultations with their constituents, political stakeholders, and supporters across Kano State. They cited the APC’s commitment to good governance, national development, and the delivery of people-oriented programmes under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the primary reasons for their move.

A joint statement issued by the eight representatives reads: “After deep reflection and wide consultations with our people, we have resolved to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision is driven by our desire to contribute more effectively to the progress of Kano State and Nigeria. We believe the APC provides the best platform to attract federal presence, infrastructure development, and improved welfare for our constituents.”

The move is part of a broader wave of defections in Kano that has seen Governor Abba Yusuf and a majority of state assembly members also exit the NNPP. It brings the APC closer to commanding a strong majority among Kano’s 24 federal constituencies in the House of Representatives.

APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, welcomed the defectors, describing the development as “a victory for progressive politics and a clear endorsement of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration.”

He added: “These distinguished lawmakers have chosen development over division. The APC is ready to work with them to accelerate infrastructure projects, youth empowerment, and economic growth in Kano State.”

The eight federal lawmakers are expected to be formally received into the APC fold in the coming days at a grand ceremony in Kano.
