In a landmark political development that is set to reshape the political landscape of Kano State and the North ahead of the 2027 general elections, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, former Deputy Governor of Kano State and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2023 elections, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The formal reception and declaration ceremony took place today at the residence of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano, where ADC national and state leaders, alongside key political stakeholders, welcomed Dr. Gawuna into the party with full endorsement.

His decision follows his voluntary resignation from the APC on March 29, 2026, and his earlier resignation from his position as Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).

Dr. Gawuna, a seasoned administrator, technocrat, and grassroots mobilizer who served as Deputy Governor under Sen. Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, described his move as a principled step toward genuine change, good governance, and people-centered leadership.

“After careful consultation with my family, political associates, and the good people of Kano State, I have decided to align with the African Democratic Congress. ADC represents the platform for true progressive politics that prioritizes the welfare of the masses, infrastructure development, and equitable resource distribution. I am joining to work hand-in-hand with visionary leaders like Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to build a better Kano and a stronger Nigeria,”

Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna stated.

The ADC Kano State Chairman, Musa Shuaibu Ungogo, expressed delight at the development, noting that Dr. Gawuna’s wealth of experience and massive followership will significantly strengthen the party’s structures across all 44 local government areas of the state.

“Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna is a man of integrity and a proven performer. His decision to join ADC is a major boost to our coalition and a clear signal that Kano’s political future lies with progressive, people-oriented parties. We are ready to work together for victory in 2027,” Musa Shuaibu Ungogo said.

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who recently joined the ADC, described Gawuna’s entry as “a homecoming for all genuine reformers in Kano politics.”

The move comes amid growing political realignments in Nigeria’s political space, with the ADC fast emerging as the preferred platform for leaders seeking a credible alternative focused on youth empowerment, agricultural revolution, education, and industrial development.

Dr. Gawuna urged his supporters and all well-meaning Kano citizens to join him in the ADC, assuring them that the party remains committed to the ideals of justice, equity, and rapid socio-economic transformation.
