The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced the shortlisting of 65 exceptional student innovators for the highly competitive N50 million grant initiative.
The announcement, made today by the Ministry of Education, marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to foster a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and technological advancement within the nation’s tertiary institutions.
The initiative, launched earlier this year, attracted thousands of applications from undergraduate and postgraduate students across the country’s federal, state, and private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Following a rigorous screening process by a panel of experts from the academic and private sectors, the list was narrowed down to 65 finalists whose projects demonstrated the highest potential for scalability, social impact, and commercial viability.
In a statement released to the press, the government commended the shortlisted students for their ingenuity and dedication.
“The caliber of entries we received is a testament to the boundless potential of Nigerian youth,” a spokesperson for the Ministry stated. “These 65 innovators represent the brightest minds in our institutions, developing solutions that address critical challenges ranging from agricultural technology and renewable energy to artificial intelligence and healthcare delivery. The Federal Government is proud to support these young trailblazers.”
The N50 million grant pool is designed to provide the selected innovators with the financial runway needed to transform their prototypes into market-ready products and services. The funds will be disbursed as a combination of seed capital, mentorship support, and access to government-backed incubation hubs.
A seven-member panel evaluated over 3,200 entries based on originality, technical feasibility, market potential, and social impact.
The 65 shortlisted students hail from 47 tertiary institutions across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, ensuring a diverse and inclusive representation of the nation’s talent.
The shortlisted innovators will proceed to a final pitch event scheduled for next month, where they will present their projects to a final selection committee. Grant awards will be distributed following the final evaluation.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to education and youth empowerment, noting that this grant is part of a broader strategy to reduce youth unemployment by equipping students with the entrepreneurial skills necessary to become job creators rather than job seekers.
“This is more than just funding; it is a vote of confidence in the future of Nigeria,” the Ministry added. “We urge the shortlisted students to make the most of this opportunity, and we encourage all Nigerian students to continue pursuing excellence. The future of our nation is being built in your classrooms and laboratories today.”
