In response to the recent increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and its impact on transportation costs and the cost of living, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved a N10,000 monthly transportation support allowance for all civil servants in the state.

The Governor announced this relief measure on Monday, March 23, 2026, during the supervision of the YEAP-SAFER support disbursement and stakeholder engagement programme at the Fashola Agribusiness Hub in Oyo town. The allowance, described as a palliative to cushion the effects of rising fuel prices, will take effect from April 2026 and will apply to workers across state and local government levels.

According to reports from labour leaders, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Oyo State chapter, Comrade Kayode Martins, the approval followed a formal request and intervention by the state council of the NLC earlier in the day. The state government swiftly granted the request to provide immediate support to the workforce amid prevailing economic challenges.

In his announcement, Governor Makinde emphasized that the N10,000 addition to monthly salaries framed as petrol/transportation support will initially run for at least three months, with the possibility of extension depending on the economic situation and sustained fuel price pressures.

This initiative underscores the administration's commitment to the welfare of civil servants and its proactive approach to mitigating the hardships faced by workers due to inflationary trends and fuel costs.

The Oyo State Government remains dedicated to fostering a conducive working environment, promoting economic resilience, and ensuring that public servants are adequately supported during difficult times.

This transportation allowance is part of broader efforts to enhance the purchasing power and well-being of the state's workforce.
