In a landmark achievement for Zamfara State and its people, the first aircraft has landed at the Gusau International Airport (also referred to as Zamfara International Airport), marking the end of more than three decades without an operational airport in the state.

On Sunday, March 22, 2026, at exactly 4:30 p.m., a Bombardier Challenger 605 aircraft with registration 5N-FGZ, operated by the Federal Government of Nigeria, touched down at the airport under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) during daylight hours. The successful test flight was witnessed by His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal, who described the moment as a historic day for Zamfara State.

“This is a proud and transformative moment for our state,” Governor Lawal said. “For over 30 years since Zamfara's creation, our people have not had the benefit of an airport on our soil. Today, we have changed that narrative."

"This successful maiden landing paves the way for greater connectivity, economic growth, investment opportunities, and improved access to essential services for our citizens.”

The test run was conducted as a one-off evaluation to confirm the airport's readiness for upcoming VIP movements scheduled for the following week.

The achievement underscores the rapid progress made under Governor Lawal’s administration in completing key infrastructure projects, including the construction of a modern runway, terminal building, perimeter fencing, and other facilities.

Zamfara State, which previously relied on airports in neighboring states for air travel, now stands on the threshold of a new era of development. The airport is expected to boost trade, tourism, agriculture exports, business activities, and job creation while enhancing the state's overall accessibility and appeal to investors.

Governor Lawal commended the Federal Government for its support, the contractors, engineers, and all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to fruition. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering more people-oriented projects that will uplift the lives of Zamfara residents.

This historic landing represents not just an infrastructural breakthrough but a symbol of hope, progress, and renewed possibilities for Zamfara State.
