Peter Gregory Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, today formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during the party's nationwide membership registration and mobilization exercise.
The registration took place at Agulu Ward 2 in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, Mr. Obi's hometown, marking his official integration into the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections. The event coincided with the flag-off of ADC's membership drive across all 21 local government areas in Anambra State, attended by prominent South-East political figures including Senator Victor Umeh and Senator Ben Obi.
In his remarks following the registration, Mr. Obi highlighted the spirit of unity sweeping across the South-East geopolitical zone. "On this journey to 2027, we in the South-East are working as a family," he stated. "All notable political leaders are here in the ADC. We are working together as one, and we are engaging with other parts of the country to build a broad coalition."
Mr. Obi stressed that no region holds a monopoly on Nigerian identity or leadership. "No region is more Nigerian than the South-East," he affirmed. "We are coordinating with stakeholders across the nation to unite opposition forces and present a credible alternative for good governance, economic revival, and national progress."
The former governor reiterated his commitment to contesting the 2027 presidential election on the ADC platform, describing it as a battle against bad leadership and systemic failures that have perpetuated poverty, insecurity, and disunity. He called on Nigerians to join the movement to "make Nigeria a working place again" through transparent, people-centered policies.
He also expressed concerns over recent electoral reforms, vowing that the ADC would challenge aspects of the 2026 Electoral Act in court if deemed detrimental to free and fair elections.
The ADC leadership welcomed Mr. Obi's registration, viewing it as a significant boost to the party's national profile and its efforts to forge a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Mr. Obi urged supporters and intending members to participate actively in the registration process at their respective wards, emphasizing grassroots mobilization as key to success.
