President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the National Assembly’s approval for a strategic upward review of the 2026 Appropriation Bill, proposing an additional ₦9 trillion to bring the total budget from ₦58.4 trillion to ₦67.4 trillion.
The request was communicated through an official presidential letter read during Tuesday’s plenary session of the Senate. The proposed adjustment is designed to strengthen fiscal transparency, settle outstanding legal obligations from previous fiscal cycles, consolidate existing government debt into a unified framework, and allocate dedicated funding for high-impact strategic national projects.
“The proposed adjustment is aimed at strengthening fiscal transparency and ensuring more effective implementation of priority national programmes,” President Tinubu stated in the communication.
This fiscal measure will reduce pressure on domestic financial markets, guarantee continuity in the delivery of essential public services, and promote greater accountability through disciplined budget execution. It reflects the administration’s commitment to proactive fiscal management that supports macro-economic stability while accelerating the delivery of critical infrastructure and national development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Senate is expected to begin formal deliberations on the President’s request in the coming days. The Executive remains fully committed to working in close partnership with the Legislature to ensure the 2026 budget serves as a powerful engine for national growth, economic resilience, and shared prosperity for all Nigerians.
