Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran on February 28, 2026, and subsequent retaliatory actions including missile and drone attacks attributed to Iran, the U.S. Department of State has advised Americans worldwide and particularly those in regions where anti-U.S. sentiment may rise to exercise increased caution.

The Worldwide Caution alert, posted on the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's website (ng.usembassy.gov), emphasizes vigilance amid potential risks such as demonstrations, heightened threats to U.S. interests, or indirect effects from the ongoing conflict.

While Nigeria is not in the immediate conflict zone, the advisory notes that Americans abroad may face disruptions, including to commercial travel, due to periodic airspace closures and broader regional instability.

Key recommendations from the U.S. authorities include:

Maintaining a high level of situational awareness at all times.

Avoiding large gatherings, protests, or locations associated with U.S. interests that could become flashpoints.

Enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov to receive real-time updates and alerts.

Following the U.S. Department of State’s Security Updates for U.S. Citizens channel on WhatsApp and monitoring travel.state.gov for the latest information.

Reviewing country-specific Travel Advisories, which for Nigeria remain at Level 3: Reconsider Travel due to separate concerns including crime, terrorism, and kidnapping.

The alert underscores that U.S. citizens in Nigeria should follow guidance from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate and contact emergency services if needed: In Abuja, call +234 209 461 4000 (press 0 for after-hours); in Lagos, call +234 201 460 3400.

The U.S. government continues to monitor the situation closely and stands ready to provide consular assistance to American citizens in Nigeria as required. The safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad remain the highest priority.
