The election, coordinated by the Directorate of Student Affairs under the leadership of Dean Professor Johnson Agunsoye, took place at the Common Room of Moremi Hall.

Faculty Presidents served as electors in line with established transition guidelines.

At the conclusion of the process: Bolaji Akinpelu from the Faculty of Arts emerged as Students’ Union President, securing nine votes. Daniel Solomon from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics was elected General Secretary, also with nine votes.

This development fulfills a commitment by Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola to reinstate the union, aimed at providing a platform for students to express their views, foster leadership development, and strengthen representation within the institution.

The SUG was originally suspended on April 24, 2016, when the university senate dissolved the union and indefinitely suspended its constitution following student protests and unrest that disrupted academic activities and threatened campus peace.

Professor Agunsoye emphasized that the restoration and election represent a deliberate step to rebuild structured student engagement and ensure peaceful coexistence on campus.

The university community welcomes this positive step forward, anticipating that the reinstated SUG will contribute to a more vibrant, inclusive, and student-centered academic environment at UNILAG.
