Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed that the coronation of Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo will proceed as scheduled, despite a boycott declaration by the Ibadan Obas.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, the Governor insisted that the installation of Oba Owoade, who will be known as Oba Akeem Owoade I, follows due process and the provisions of the Oyo State Chiefs Law.

The crisis erupted after the 11 Ibadan Obas including the Okere of Saki, Onpetu of Ijeru, and Ekarun of Ogbomoso announced their decision to boycott the ceremony, citing irregularities and lack of consultation with statutory kingmakers. The Ibadan Obas, led by the Otun Olubadan, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, argued that the process leading to the selection of the new Alaafin was flawed.

However, Governor Makinde dismissed the boycott as inconsequential, stating: “The Alaafin stool is a traditional institution with a clear succession plan. The Ibadan Obas have no veto power over who becomes the Alaafin of Oyo. Their boycott changes nothing. The coronation holds this Saturday at the Oyo Township Stadium.”

The Governor added that all necessary security arrangements have been made and that the state government recognizes Oba Owoade as the rightful heir to the throne.

A representative of the new Alaafin, Prince Tunde Owoade, welcomed the government’s stance, saying the family is focused on a peaceful and historic coronation.

As tensions simmer, traditional rulers across the state remain divided, raising fresh questions about the strained relationship between Governor Makinde and the Ibadan chieftaincy hierarchy.

The coronation is set to take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with top government officials and dignitaries expected to attend.
