The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate for the 2027 Abia State election, Mr. Eric Opah, has called for swift and thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the gruesome murder of Miss Wendy Achumba, a 21-year-old nursing student from Abia State.
Miss Wendy Achumba, an indigene of Obingwa Local Government Area (from the Ngwa community), was allegedly raped and murdered in her off-campus residence at Umuadara, Umulogho in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State. Her body was reportedly discovered with her throat slit in a horrifying scene that has sparked widespread outrage across Abia and Imo States.
In a statement issued today, Eric Opah expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, describing the incident as “painful, heartbreaking, and unfortunate.” He emphasized that the death of the promising young student represents a tragedy not only for her family but for the entire society.
“The brutal killing of Wendy Achumba must not be treated with levity. We demand full justice for her family and the people of Abia State. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be speedily prosecuted to the full extent of the law. No young woman should live in fear while pursuing her education,” Opah stated.
Opah urged security agencies in Imo and Abia States to ensure a transparent investigation, bring all those involved to justice, and take stronger measures to protect students, particularly female students living in off-campus accommodations. He also called on the government to address the rising cases of gender-based violence and insecurity in the region.
The APC candidate extended his heartfelt condolences to the Achumba family, the people of Obingwa Local Government Area, and the entire Abia State, praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul.
