The Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the performance of Nigeria’s senior national football team, the Super Eagles, following their failure to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a candid remark that has sparked widespread reactions across the nation, Minister Wike stated: “We are not happy with the Super Eagles. Even countries I’ve not heard of qualified for the World Cup.”

The Minister’s comments reflect the growing frustration among millions of Nigerians who have long regarded the Super Eagles as a source of national pride. Nigeria’s absence from football’s biggest global stage marks a significant setback for a country with one of Africa’s richest footballing histories and a passionate fan base.

Minister Wike emphasized the need for urgent reforms within the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the broader football ecosystem to restore the team’s competitiveness. He stressed that mediocrity would no longer be tolerated, urging stakeholders to prioritize excellence, accountability, and proper investment in grassroots development, player welfare, and technical leadership.

“Nigerians deserve better. We have the talent, the passion, and the resources. What we need now is the right structure and leadership to deliver results,” the Minister added.

The Super Eagles’ qualification campaign has come under intense scrutiny, with critics pointing to inconsistent performances, tactical shortcomings, and administrative challenges as key factors behind the team’s elimination.

Minister Wike’s remarks are seen as a call to action for all those involved in Nigerian football to rise to the occasion and begin the process of rebuilding for future competitions.
