Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has appealed to the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) to immediately suspend its ongoing strike and allow public schools across the state to reopen, following the union’s protest over the recent abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.

The Governor gave the charge while addressing stakeholders on the security situation in the affected area, assuring parents, teachers, and residents that the Oyo State Government is intensifying efforts to secure the safe release of the abducted victims.

“We understand the pain and concern of our teachers and the entire education community. The safety of our children and educators is of paramount importance. However, keeping our schools closed punishes the innocent pupils who are eager to continue their education,” Governor Makinde said.

He added: “I urge the NUT to suspend this strike forthwith and reopen the schools. My government is working round the clock with all relevant security agencies to ensure the victims are rescued unharmed. We will not rest until every abducted person is safely returned to their families.

Governor Makinde reiterated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of teachers and the overall improvement of the education sector in Oyo State, noting that several initiatives have been implemented to enhance security in schools and surrounding communities.

The Governor called for calm and collaboration from all stakeholders as security operations continue in Oriire Local Government Area and other parts of the state.
