The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to roll out a comprehensive National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System aimed at addressing key national challenges, including insecurity, fraud, and inefficiencies in logistics and emergency response.
The initiative, which assigns a unique, GIS-enabled digital address to every building and location across the country including rural and underserved communities will enhance precision in security operations, improve public safety, and support broader digital economy goals.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, disclosed the plans during the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System Workshop themed “Operationalising the Nigerian Digital Postcode for National Security and Public Safety,” held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre in Abuja.
“The digital postcode system is not just a postal tool; it is a critical national security asset and a foundation for modern governance,” said Dr. Tijani. “By providing accurate, machine-readable addresses, we will empower security agencies to respond faster and more effectively, reduce fraud in service delivery, streamline e-commerce and logistics, and enhance emergency services nationwide.”
The system is being developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and other stakeholders. A model has already been validated, with field exercises underway to ensure accuracy and applicability across Nigeria’s varied landscapes. Full nationwide implementation is targeted in the coming months, following ongoing stakeholder engagements.
This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader digital transformation agenda, including fibre optic rollout projects and data exchange platforms, positioning Nigeria as a leader in leveraging technology for development and security.
