Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, has outlined a pragmatic approach to tackling Nigeria’s persistent insecurity challenges. In a recent interview, Obi affirmed his commitment to dialogue with bandits and other violent groups genuinely willing to renounce criminality and embrace peace, while pledging decisive military and law enforcement action against those who persist in violence.

Speaking on BlackBox with Rufai Oseni on June 16, 2026, Obi emphasized the need for a balanced strategy combining negotiation, intelligence, economic development, and force where necessary to restore security and foster national unity.

“In uniting the country, anybody who wants peace, I will talk with him; I will negotiate with him,” Obi stated. “Anybody who wants war will go to war.” He added that his administration would differentiate between those open to peace and those committed to criminality, ensuring the protection of Nigerian lives and livelihoods.

Obi highlighted that insecurity has severely impacted key sectors including agriculture, education, investment, and overall economic growth. Drawing from his track record as former Governor of Anambra State, where he implemented effective security measures, Obi reiterated that sustainable peace requires addressing root causes such as poverty and lack of opportunities alongside robust enforcement.

This position has sparked widespread discussion across Nigeria, with supporters praising the nuanced, results-oriented approach and critics debating the feasibility of negotiations with bandit groups. Obi maintains that no single solution fits all and that leadership demands both compassion for those seeking redemption and strength against threats to national stability.

“As President, my priority will be the safety and prosperity of all Nigerians. We will pursue every avenue for peace without compromising the rule of law or the security of our citizens,” Obi
