The Abia State Government has officially begun the phased relocation of transport operators to the newly constructed Nnenna Otti Central Bus Terminal in Umuahia, marking a significant step towards modernising the state’s transportation system.

This initiative, under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, aims to centralise transport operations, reduce traffic congestion in the city centre, improve passenger safety and comfort, and establish a more organised and efficient public transport hub.

The relocation follows successful stakeholder engagements and the signing of operational agreements with various transport unions. An enforcement team has been inaugurated to ensure smooth compliance, with clear directives against any form of brutality during the process.

Speaking on the development, government officials noted that informal transport operators and major unions have already commenced operations at the terminal. The facility is designed to function with high standards, comparable to modern airport protocols, complete with supporting infrastructure for seamless passenger experience.

Key Benefits of the New Terminal Include: Centralised and organised transport operations. Improved traffic flow and reduced congestion in Umuahia. Enhanced safety and security for commuters and operators. Better facilities for passengers and integration with other transport modes. Support for the state’s broader green transport initiatives, including the Abia Green Bus Service.

The government has urged all remaining transport operators to fully comply with the directive, assuring them of a conducive operating environment at the new terminal. Full operations are expected to stabilise rapidly as the transition progresses.

This relocation is part of Governor Otti’s commitment to transforming Abia State’s infrastructure and delivering world-class public services to residents.
