Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state to address the growing accumulation of refuse on major roads and in communities.
Following concerns over refuse backlogs in areas such as Mushin, Yaba, Egbeda, and other parts of the metropolis, the Governor has instructed relevant agencies under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, along with Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), to work round-the-clock to clear all accumulated waste and restore cleanliness as quickly as possible.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu has consequently directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state, with relevant agencies and service providers working round the clock to clear backlogs and restore normalcy as quickly as possible,” a statement from the Governor’s Office read.
The directive comes as Lagos continues to generate over 13,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, placing significant pressure on existing infrastructure and landfills. The Governor emphasized the need for intensified efforts to prevent health hazards, flooding risks, and environmental degradation, particularly during the rainy season.
Residents are urged to cooperate by properly bagging their waste, using designated bins, and avoiding indiscriminate dumping. The state government has warned that sanctions will be applied to underperforming operators and individuals who violate environmental laws.
This immediate action reinforces the Lagos State Government’s commitment under the THEMES Plus Agenda to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for all residents.
