Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned recent allegations by former President Olusegun Obasanjo accusing him of bribing the late Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, with ₦5 million to orchestrate an impeachment plot.
In a sharp rebuttal, Atiku described Obasanjo’s claims as a desperate attempt to rewrite history and unfairly tarnish his reputation, especially at a time when the former President appears intent on influencing the 2027 political landscape in favour of his preferred candidate.
Atiku urged Obasanjo to be transparent about his political preferences rather than resorting to unsubstantiated historical accusations.
“Be bold to support your kinsman,” Atiku fired back, advising the former leader to openly back his preferred successor instead of engaging in what he termed character assassination and historical revisionism.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku expressed disappointment that Obasanjo would drag the name of the late Ghali Na’Abba into the controversy, noting that it is unfair to make allegations against someone no longer alive to defend himself.
“As Africans, we understand the solemn duty of speaking truthfully about the dead. It is therefore deeply troubling that former President Obasanjo has chosen this moment to allege that I gave the late Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba ₦5 million to begin impeachment work,” the statement read.
Atiku maintained that the allegations are not only reckless but part of a broader pattern aimed at conferring undue political advantage ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He called on Nigerians to focus on issues of governance, leadership competence, and national development rather than recycled political drama.
The former Vice President reaffirmed his commitment to the democratic process and urged all stakeholders to prioritize the interest of Nigeria above personal or ethnic agendas.
