Former Governor of Lagos State and immediate past Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, has categorically stated that he has no interest in contesting for the presidency of Nigeria.
In a recent interview, Fashola dismissed speculations about future political ambitions at the highest level, emphasizing his contentment with his contributions to public service over more than two decades. When asked directly about any plans to run for president, he responded emphatically in the negative, adding with characteristic humor, “I’m president at home.”
Fashola, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished public servants for his transformative leadership as Governor of Lagos State (2007–2015) and his pivotal role in infrastructure development as Minister, reflected on his journey as “an unimaginable privilege.” He expressed hope that his story would inspire younger generations of Nigerians to pursue public service and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
The former minister also addressed his relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that he prefers to offer advice privately rather than through public criticism. “I have his ears,” Fashola said, underscoring the value of maintaining direct lines of communication.
“My focus remains on contributing as a citizen and supporting the next generation of leaders,” Fashola stated. He reiterated that he does not need a formal title to serve the country and remains committed to private interventions where necessary.
This declaration comes amid ongoing political discussions ahead of future electoral cycles, providing clarity on Fashola’s personal stance and allowing focus on other national priorities.
