The Federal Government has announced plans to implement a robust monitoring and evaluation framework to track poverty levels and household incomes across the country. This initiative aims to accurately assess the real impact of ongoing economic reforms on Nigerians and ensure that the dividends of reform reach the most vulnerable citizens.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, made this disclosure while emphasizing the government’s commitment to people-centered economic policies. He noted that while macroeconomic stability has improved, the administration remains focused on translating these gains into better living standards for ordinary Nigerians.

“Data is critical for effective policymaking. We will track key indicators such as poverty rates, income distribution, and cost-of-living metrics to continuously evaluate the effects of our reforms,” Oyedele stated. “This will enable us to make necessary adjustments, strengthen social protection programs, and ensure that no one is left behind.”

The tracking system will leverage data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), existing social registers, and new digital tools to provide real-time insights. It forms part of broader efforts under the Renewed Hope Agenda to address the cost-of-living challenges arising from reforms such as fuel subsidy removal, exchange rate unification, and fiscal consolidation, while building a more sustainable economy.

The Minister assured that findings from this tracking mechanism will directly inform the design and scaling of interventions such as cash transfers, food security programs, skills development, and livelihood support initiatives.

“Reforms are not an end in themselves but a means to create a more prosperous and equitable Nigeria,” Oyedele added. “By rigorously measuring their impact on poverty and incomes, we can accelerate progress and deliver tangible relief to millions of households.”

This data-driven approach aligns with the government’s determination to reduce poverty, create jobs, and promote inclusive growth in line with global best practices.
