Residents of Yenagoa and surrounding communities in Bayelsa State are expressing renewed optimism and relief as the Bayelsa State Directorate of Flood and Erosion Control ramps up proactive measures to combat the perennial threat of flooding.

In response to the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook highlighting risks to several local government areas, the state government has deployed heavy equipment for extensive drainage clearance across the capital and flood-prone zones. These intensified efforts include desilting major waterways, clearing blocked channels, and implementing other engineering interventions to improve water flow and reduce the risk of inundation.

The Directorate of Flood and Erosion Control, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders including the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has also strengthened public sensitization campaigns. These initiatives educate residents on flood preparedness, early warning systems, and sustainable environmental practices to minimize disaster impacts.

Governor Douye Diri’s administration has prioritized flood mitigation as a key component of its development agenda, with significant investments in infrastructure aimed at building long-term resilience. Communities that have suffered devastating floods in previous years, including the severe 2022 event, are particularly appreciative of the visible actions being taken ahead of the peak rainy season.

Local leaders and residents have welcomed the developments, noting improved confidence in the government’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and livelihoods. “For the first time in many years, we are seeing serious work being done before the floods come,” said a resident of a high-risk area in Yenagoa.

The state government continues to urge citizens to avoid dumping waste in drains, refrain from illegal dredging and construction on floodplains, and heed official warnings. Pre-positioning of relief materials and evacuation plans are also being finalized in partnership with federal agencies.
