Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, today held a meeting with former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, in a development that has triggered fresh discussions about the former president’s political influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Photographs from the engagement, shared on social media by Obi’s campaign photographer, showed the former Anambra State governor dressed in a blue traditional outfit seated alongside Chief Obasanjo, who was clad in white traditional attire and a patterned blue cap. A Catholic bishop was also present during parts of the meeting.
Neither Mr. Obi nor Chief Obasanjo issued an official statement detailing the substance of their discussions. However, the meeting comes at a time of growing public interest in Obasanjo’s political leanings, following recent claims and counter-claims about his alleged support for various political camps.
Recently, the Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum suggested that the former president was quietly backing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. That assertion was firmly rejected by Akin Osuntokun, a former Political Adviser to Obasanjo, who insisted that the elder statesman remains a principal supporter of the Obi–Kwankwaso opposition ticket.
“If you can say Obasanjo is supporting any ticket, it is the Peter Obi–Kwankwaso ticket. As a matter of fact, he is the principal sponsor of that ticket,” Osuntokun stated in a recent television interview.
The latest meeting between Obi and Obasanjo is expected to intensify speculation about ongoing consultations within the opposition ahead of the 2027 polls. As of the time of this release, no further details on the purpose or outcomes of the engagement have been made public by either party.
