An Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, killing five people and injuring five others.
The Boeing 767-300 freighter, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598 for Amazon and flown by 21 Air, arrived from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It touched down around 2 p.m. local time on Runway 30.
The aircraft failed to stop within the runway length. It continued past the end of the pavement, crossed a nearby road, and struck multiple vehicles. The plane then caught fire.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Raied Jadallah confirmed the casualties. Five people died at the scene. Three of the injured were listed in critical condition and taken to a trauma center. Two others received treatment at a local hospital.
Rescue teams arrived within seconds. More than 200 firefighters and 60 units responded to the fire and carried out complex extrications of people trapped in vehicles and the aircraft.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration launched investigations into the cause of the runway overrun. Airport operations were temporarily halted, with runways and taxiways closed for several hours.
