Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has formally presented his Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Felipe VI at the Royal Palace in Madrid, officially assuming office as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Spain.
The ceremony took place on Monday, 14 September 2026. Dr. Ikpeazu was received at the Royal Palace with full military honours before being introduced to the Spanish monarch. He presented the original Letters of Credence as the duly appointed representative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Government of Nigeria.
The event formed part of a traditional credentials presentation ceremony in which newly appointed ambassadors from six countries, Ghana, Chile, Venezuela, Nigeria, Thailand and Palestine presented their credentials to King Felipe VI. The ambassadors travelled from the Palacio de Santa Cruz, headquarters of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, to the Royal Palace for the solemn proceedings.
Dr. Ikpeazu had earlier presented copies of his Letters of Credence (Copie d’Usage) to the Director-General for Protocol, Chancery and Orders and Introductor of Ambassadors, Mr. Adrián Martín Couce, at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid on 13 July 2026. The formal presentation to the King completed the accreditation process and authorised him to fully discharge his diplomatic duties.
Appointed by President Tinubu and confirmed by the Nigerian Senate, the former Governor of Abia State is expected to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Spain. Priority areas of engagement include trade and investment, education, tourism, culture, renewable energy, technology and the protection of the interests of Nigerians living in Spain.
