President Donald Trump has declined to intervene in the case of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children, stating that the matter is a state issue outside federal jurisdiction.
Trump made his position clear on Sunday when asked about a public appeal from Clancy’s lawyer for a presidential pardon.
“It’s a very sad situation. There is no winner there. There is no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead. So, I don’t know. It’s actually a state situation, you know, not a federal,” Trump said.
Clancy, 36, faces three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the January 2023 deaths of her children: Cora, aged five; Dawson, aged three; and Callan, aged eight months. Her trial in Plymouth County Superior Court ended in a mistrial earlier this month after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.
Kevin Reddington, Clancy’s attorney, had publicly requested that Trump consider a pardon during a television interview last week. Reddington acknowledged that a president lacks the constitutional authority to pardon state-level offences.
Trump described Reddington as a capable attorney and expressed hope that the parties involved would resolve the matter at the state level.
“He’s a good attorney. I’ve heard from other people he’s a very good attorney. I hope they can work it out. That’s something they have to work out … There is no win there,” the President said.
Clancy’s defence has maintained that she suffered from postpartum psychosis at the time of the incident. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek a retrial.
