The Anambra State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat illegal arms trafficking and enhance public safety across the state.

On Friday, August 22, 2025, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Akwuzu, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended a 65-year-old suspect, Mr. Akpan Godwin, in Nkpor, near Onitsha. The suspect was found in possession of 1,100 rounds of live ammunition, raising serious concerns about the scale of illicit arms circulation in the region.

During preliminary interrogation, Mr. Godwin confessed to being involved in the illegal sale of ammunition and disclosed the identities of other individuals allegedly connected to the criminal network. The Command has since launched a full-scale investigation and a manhunt to apprehend all accomplices and dismantle the syndicate responsible for the proliferation of arms in the state.

Speaking on the arrest, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated: “This arrest underscores our commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention. The suspect’s confession has provided valuable leads, and we are intensifying efforts to bring all collaborators to justice.”
