The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is facing intense public scrutiny following disturbing revelations that a Local Government Inspector (LGI), identified as Mr. Anayo, allegedly dismissed the brutal assault of a female corps member as “training” for future domestic abuse.
The incident occurred in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where 28-year-old corps member Jennifer Elohor was reportedly assaulted, stripped, and detained by operatives of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group during a raid on the corps lodge. Despite presenting valid NYSC identification, Elohor and her colleagues were accused of internet fraud and subjected to physical abuse.
According to Elohor’s account, when she reported the incident to Mr. Anayo, his response was not only dismissive but deeply troubling. He allegedly stated: “Some of you ladies are going to get married to men who beat women. So, this is training for you.”
This comment, captured in a viral video and corroborated by multiple witnesses, has sparked outrage across social media and civil society groups, who are demanding accountability and justice.
The NYSC headquarters has condemned the assault as “unacceptable and dehumanising,” and affirmed its commitment to supporting ongoing investigations by the Nigeria Police Force. The Anambra State Government has also taken swift action, reportedly dismissing eight vigilante operatives involved in the incident and covering the victim’s medical expenses.
Nonye Soludo, wife of Governor Charles Soludo, described the assault as “ugly and humiliating,” calling for systemic reforms to prevent future abuses.
