In a heartfelt tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, Otunba Segun Showunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and convener of The Alternative, hosted a 40th-day Fidau prayer session in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Friday.
The solemn event, held at the Keesi Central Mosque, brought together religious leaders, political figures, and community members to honor the disciplined and modest life of the late president. Chief Imam Sheikh Akeem Olorunisola led the prayers, urging Nigerians to emulate Buhari’s integrity and simplicity.
Speaking at the gathering, Showunmi reflected on Buhari’s legacy, emphasizing his minimalistic lifestyle and commitment to public service. “This prayer is not just a tribute, but a call to action for our leaders to live with sincerity and humility,” Showunmi said. “President Buhari lived a life devoid of extravagance, and his restraint from interfering in national affairs after leaving office is a lesson in leadership.”
Guest lecturer Muhammad Robiu Adekolu echoed these sentiments, highlighting Buhari’s fear of God and his refusal to indulge in personal aggrandizement. “He held the highest office without owning a private jet or university, unlike many others. His legacy is one of sacrifice and service,” Adekolu noted.
Showunmi also prayed for continued unity between Nigeria’s North and South, particularly between the Yoruba and northern communities, stressing the importance of national cohesion.
