The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially confirmed that it is engaged in extensive internal consultations aimed at selecting a presidential candidate capable of unifying the nation and leading the party to victory in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, PDP Deputy National Legal Adviser, Barrister Okechukwu Osuoha, emphasized that while public speculation has centered on prominent figures such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the party is considering a broader pool of aspirants through strategic and discreet negotiations.

“Those names you mentioned remain speculative at this stage. What is important now in the PDP are negotiations and discussions. The party is engaging in deep consultations to identify the most credible candidate who can unify the country and command nationwide support,” Osuoha stated.

The PDP leadership has reiterated that its immediate priority is the successful conduct of its upcoming national convention, where new national officers will be elected to steer the party for the next four years. This convention will lay the groundwork for the presidential primaries and help solidify the party’s internal cohesion.

According to Osuoha, aspirants from across the South—particularly the South-West, South-East, and South-South—have begun reaching out to stakeholders in private meetings, building momentum ahead of formal declarations. The party’s zoning arrangement, which places the presidency in the southern region, will play a pivotal role in narrowing down the field.

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has also acknowledged the growing list of contenders, noting that the PDP’s strategy will hinge on selecting a candidate who can bridge internal divisions and present a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
