In a heartwarming and unexpected moment at the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony held at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, England women’s national team coach Sarina Wiegman gave a shout-out to Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy, sparking smiles and applause across the room.

Wiegman, who was honored with the prestigious Women’s Coach of the Year award following her historic Euro 2025 victory with the Lionesses, used her acceptance speech to celebrate her team’s success—and add a touch of musical flair.

“Let’s celebrate our successes. And if Burna Boy is around, maybe we would do a little bit of dancing too,” Wiegman said, drawing cheers from the audience.

The Dutch tactician has previously expressed admiration for Burna Boy’s music, revealing that his hit collaboration with Ed Sheeran, “For My Hand,” was her most-played song of 2023 on Spotify.

Burna Boy, known for his electrifying performances and global influence, quickly responded on social media: “Haha, I’m up for it Sarina! A huge congrats to you and the team #Lionesses,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The lighthearted exchange has delighted fans worldwide, blending the worlds of football and Afrobeats in a celebration of excellence and cultural connection. Burna Boy, who made history as the first African artist to perform at a UEFA Champions League final in 2023, continues to be a symbol of African pride on global stages.
