Prominent Nigerian businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, has commended African nations for their impressive performances at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, while calling on FIFA to urgently address the standard of refereeing to protect the integrity of the game.

In a statement following the conclusion of Africa’s campaign at the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Elumelu praised the continent’s representatives for showcasing the talent and potential of African football on the global stage.

“Well done to all the African countries that represented our continent at the World Cup. You made Africa proud and showed the world what African football is capable of,” Elumelu said.

He particularly highlighted the resilience and quality displayed by teams including Morocco, Egypt, and others, noting that their outings have elevated the profile of African football.

However, Elumelu expressed concern over several controversial refereeing decisions that impacted African teams during the competition. He urged FIFA to take decisive steps to improve officiating standards.

“But @FIFAWorldCup needs to improve the standard of refereeing because if poor officiating continues, it will damage the game,” he warned.

The Heirs Holdings and UBA Group Chairman emphasized that fair and consistent refereeing is essential to maintaining trust and credibility in international football. He congratulated all African teams on their efforts and called for continued investment in the development of the sport across the continent.

Elumelu’s comments come as stakeholders reflect on Africa’s participation in the expanded 2026 World Cup, which featured a record number of teams from the continent.
