Prominent Nigerian author and socio-political commentator Reno Omokri has publicly refuted recent claims made by American television host Bill Maher alleging genocide in Nigeria. The assertion, made during a segment of Maher’s show, has sparked widespread reactions across social media and diplomatic circles.

In a strongly worded statement released via his verified social media platforms, Omokri described Maher’s comments as “reckless, uninformed, and dangerous,” emphasizing that such allegations could inflame tensions and misrepresent the complex realities of Nigeria’s internal security challenges.

“There is no genocide in Nigeria. What we are witnessing are tragic incidents of insecurity, which the government must address. But to label it genocide is not only false—it is inflammatory and undermines the efforts of those working toward peace,” Omokri stated.

He further urged international commentators to engage with credible sources and ground their assessments in verified data rather than sensational headlines or partisan narratives.

Omokri, a former presidential aide and human rights advocate, called on the Nigerian government to issue a formal diplomatic response and to engage with international media platforms to correct the record.
