Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu have jointly called for renewed efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions and promote the inclusion of women in political leadership.
Speaking at a high-level policy dialogue held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, both leaders emphasized the urgent need to deepen democratic values and ensure that governance reflects the diversity and aspirations of all Nigerians.
Senator Akpabio underscored the importance of participatory democracy, noting that inclusive governance is key to national development.
“A democracy that excludes women is incomplete. We must build institutions that not only protect our freedoms but also empower every citizen—especially our women—to lead and contribute meaningfully,” Akpabio stated.
Echoing this sentiment, Hon. Benjamin Kalu highlighted the role of legislative reforms in advancing gender equity and democratic resilience.
“We must move beyond rhetoric and enact policies that guarantee equal representation. Women bring unique perspectives and solutions to the table, and their voices must be heard at every level of decision-making,” Kalu said.
The event, attended by lawmakers, civil society leaders, and international partners, featured discussions on electoral reforms, youth engagement, and strategies to increase female participation in politics. Stakeholders also explored ways to strengthen democratic institutions ahead of the next electoral cycle.
