A senior aide to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a strong rebuttal to recent comments made by a United States lawmaker regarding Nigeria’s democratic processes and governance, describing the remarks as “uninformed and disrespectful.”

The aide, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, criticized the U.S. legislator’s statements as lacking context and failing to reflect the realities of Nigeria’s political landscape. The comments, which surfaced during a congressional hearing in Washington, reportedly questioned the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system and governance under President Tinubu.

“Nigeria is a sovereign nation with a robust democratic framework. It is unfortunate that some foreign lawmakers, without adequate understanding of our institutions, choose to make sweeping statements that undermine our progress,” Onanuga stated.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s 2023 general elections were conducted in accordance with constitutional provisions and overseen by independent bodies, with international observers acknowledging improvements in transparency and logistics.

“President Tinubu remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting rule of law, and engaging constructively with global partners. However, we will not tolerate condescension or mischaracterization from any quarter,” he added.
