In a landmark move set to redefine Nigeria’s energy landscape, Dangote Industries Limited has officially announced the expansion of its Lekki-based Dangote Petroleum Refinery from its current capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to a staggering 1.4 million barrels per day (mbpd).
The announcement was made by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, during a press briefing in Lagos. Flanked by prominent business leaders including Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman of First Bank, Dangote emphasized that the expansion will position the refinery as the largest single-train refinery in the world, surpassing India’s Jamnagar Refinery.
“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Upon completion, this will make it the largest refinery in the world,” Dangote stated.
Dangote also highlighted the strategic importance of the expansion, noting that it reflects confidence in Nigeria’s leadership and the broader African energy market. He credited President Bola Tinubu’s vision of transforming the petroleum hub as a driving force behind the initiative.
This expansion is expected to significantly reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products, enhance foreign exchange earnings, and stimulate industrial growth across the continent.
