In a groundbreaking gesture aimed at promoting girl-child education and gender inclusion, Vice President Kashim Shettima symbolically handed over his seat to teenager Joy Ogah, allowing her to serve as Nigeria’s Vice President for a day. The event, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was organized in collaboration with PLAN International and marks a powerful statement in support of youth leadership and female empowerment.

Joy Ogah, a passionate advocate for girls’ rights, assumed the role during a special ceremony attended by government officials, development partners, and civil society leaders. Her temporary appointment was part of PLAN International’s global “Girls Takeover” campaign, which seeks to amplify the voices of young women and promote their participation in decision-making spaces.

Vice President Shettima praised Joy’s courage and vision, stating, “This symbolic takeover is a reaffirmation of our administration’s commitment to promoting girl-child education and gender equality. Joy represents the future we are building—one where every girl has the opportunity to lead.”

During her time in office, Joy addressed key issues affecting Nigerian youth, including access to education, menstrual health, and digital inclusion. She urged policymakers to prioritize safe learning environments and invest in programs that empower girls across the country.

Helen Idiong, Director of Programme, Quality, and Innovation at PLAN International, commended the Tinubu-led government for its support, saying, “This initiative sends a strong message that girls belong in leadership. We are proud to partner with Nigeria in this transformative journey.”
