The President of the Senate, His Excellency Godswill Akpabio, has expressed deep sadness over the passing of veteran journalist and co-founder of Newswatch magazine, Chief Dan Agbese, describing his death as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s media landscape and to the nation’s democratic evolution.
In a condolence message released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Senator Akpabio hailed the late Agbese as “a courageous journalist, a consummate professional, and a patriot whose pen shaped national discourse for decades.” He emphasized that Agbese’s work helped nurture Nigeria’s democratic values, promote accountability, and strengthen press freedom across the country.
“Chief Dan Agbese was more than a journalist, he was an institution,” Akpabio said. “Through Newswatch, he stood at the forefront of investigative reporting and fearless commentary, inspiring generations of media practitioners. His passing is a major blow not only to the media community but to our democracy, which he served with unwavering dedication.”
The Senate President recalled Agbese’s pivotal contributions to ethical journalism, nation-building, and civic enlightenment, noting that his legacy will continue to live on through the countless journalists and leaders shaped by his professionalism and integrity.
