A special tribunal in Bangladesh has delivered a historic and highly controversial verdict, sentencing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death over her alleged role in the violent crackdown on nationwide student protests.

The tribunal, established to investigate allegations of state-ordered repression during the student-led demonstrations, ruled that the former leader bore “direct responsibility” for the excessive force used against peaceful protesters. According to the judgment, the crackdown resulted in widespread injuries, arrests, and several reported deaths.

In its statement, the tribunal declared:
“The evidence presented demonstrates a clear abuse of executive power and a deliberate attempt to silence dissent. Such actions constitute grave violations of human rights.”

Sheikh Hasina, who served multiple terms as Prime Minister and has long been one of Bangladesh’s most influential political figures, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Her legal team condemned the ruling as “politically motivated,” announcing an immediate plan to appeal the judgment to the Supreme Court.

International human rights groups and foreign governments have reacted with shock, urging Bangladesh to ensure due process and uphold international legal standards. Several organizations have called for an independent review of the tribunal’s procedures, citing concerns about transparency and political interference.

Protests and heightened security have been reported across several major cities as citizens respond to the unprecedented ruling. Civil society groups have expressed fear that the verdict could deepen political tensions at a time when the nation is already navigating significant uncertainty.
