A group of 44 federal lawmakers have formally written to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging the Federal Government to adopt a political solution to address the challenges facing the South-East region. Central to their appeal is the demand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention since 2021.
In the letter, the lawmakers emphasized that resolving the matter through political dialogue rather than prolonged legal confrontation would help restore peace, stability, and economic progress in the South-East. They noted that the continued detention of Kanu has fueled tension and unrest, undermining efforts to foster national unity.
“We believe that a political solution is the most viable path to healing divisions and addressing grievances in the South-East. The release of Nnamdi Kanu will serve as a confidence-building measure and open the door to constructive engagement,” the lawmakers stated.
The appeal reflects growing pressure on the Federal Government to explore reconciliation strategies that prioritize dialogue and inclusivity. The lawmakers expressed optimism that President Tinubu’s administration can leverage this opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and promote national cohesion.
